rough rough rough WIP of my jam entry for Oct in %Phantasy-Star-Arts. It feels like something I've never done before. I've certainly never done a greyscale-ish paint of it before. I still don't know what should be going on just yet.
But it looks just too good to throw it in my scraps D:

EDIT 10/2: Put down the colors. I think I'm just about done, just something in the background and some more blending.

I think you are doing mighty fine! It's already starting to look plenty different! No need to hurry, you still have the whole month to get ideas for what you can do with it.
Have you ever tried using photo manipulation tools on your artwork? (Dunno if SAI has those) like levels and color balance.
Maybe a adding a rim light would be cool.
